In the past Laib's Gunsmithing has noticed the problems with 3200 Remingtons and Perazzi MX-8 and MX-3 receivers when the firing pin holes are damaged due to extended use. If the receiver face is not hard enough to withstand a lot of shooting, the firing pin hole has a tendency to become concave causing the firing pin to hang up the hole and not retact properly into the receiver after firing the gun. When you open your gun in this sistuation, the firing pins can hang up, causing them to break to make it very difficult to open. This conversion or repair can handle the problem. Tom Fox of Laib's Gunsmithing has developed a system which allows him to cut the face of that receiver, dovetail it, and install a hardened piece of steel making a nice, neat conversion which will certainly extend the life of your gun.
A frequent problem with this gun is that repairs generally go to the forearm, especially the forend iron and the forearm wood. The primary problem with the forearm iron on the Remington3200 is the top of the ejector hammer pivot pin hole on each side of the forend iron tends to crack because of the thin type of metal used there. Laib's Gunsmithing redesigns that area and installs a metal gusset. The work includes high temp silver soldering, rebluing, your forend iron, and refitting to your gun.
The best way to determine whether you have this problem is to take the forearm off your 3200 to see how the forearm iron fits the wood. If there is a gap at the upper corners of the iron adjacent to the wood, you most likely do have a problem, and it is probably starting to bend down.
We do recommend that you have this modification done whether or not your forearm iron is already cracked, because the more pressure that is caused to the wood by a crack forearm iron, the more likely it will be that the wood will crack on both sides.
At this time a new forearm wood from Remington is rather expensive. If your wood is still intact, it is an inexpensive fix in the long run. We do a lot of these repairs for customers who have brand new 3200's, which they are just starting to shoot. This is a good investment.
We can also repair wood even if it is cracked on both sides. At the top end forearm latch area on the 3200, we have seen problems with high grade wood. The latch tends to brak through the forend wood near the barrel, so we remove the iron and latch plate area, mill out a new shelf, and rebuild that area with aluminum and fiberglass bedding. Additionally, Laib's Gunsmithing carries most repair parts for the 3200's, except wood.
